A new track was uploaded today on recently deceased rapper Lil Peep’s YouTube channel called “Falling Down”, which also features recently deceased rapper XXXTentacion. Since Lil Peep’s death via overdose in November 2017 and XXXTentacion’s death via homicide in June 2018, both artists have seen a steady stream of posthumous releases.
“Falling Down” was originally a collaboration between Lil Peep and ILoveMakonnen, but after Lil Peep’s death, XXXTentacion felt inspired to contribute to it with Makonnen’s permission. The track was released today with permission from both deceased rappers’ mothers.
The song itself is minimal in its lyricism and variety, but it does showcase Lil Peep’s signature melancholic and punkish vocals backed by an energetic guitar rift repeated throughout most of the track. Somewhere towards the middle, XXXTentacion plugs his own vocals. XXX’s vocals are somewhat out of character in regards to his earlier work but mesh well with the overall vibe of the song. The end of the song features a sampling of an interview where XXX describes discovering Lil Peep on the internet after he died and thinking that they would’ve been friends.
A full-length album collaboration between Lil Peep and ILoveMakonnen is set to release soon; “Falling Down” may just be a precursor. Listen to “Falling Down” below:
